We have heard about probiotics many times. The media blows us with advertisements promoting bacterial strains that help people.
But what are prebiotics? How can you deliver them and why are they so special? Today we will dispel doubts about the use and properties of prebiotics.

To be on the safe side, and for the sake of order in this article, let’s explain what probiotics are. Probiotics are live microbes that exert beneficial health effects when administered in appropriate amounts. In probiotic products, we deal mainly with lactic acid bacteria that inhabit the human body, among others. In pharmacies you can find products containing single strains of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillusspp., Streptococcus spp.), Mold cultures (Aspergillusspp.), Yeast strains (Saccharomyces spp.) Or lactic acid bacteria together with individual yeast strains. They have a positive effect on the functioning of the intestines and ensure the proper development of the intestinal microflora. Probiotic bacteria are added to various foods, e.g. in yoghurt, silage, beer, wine.

Then let’s move on to prebiotics. It would seem that they differ so little. And yet it is not about bacteria. At least not directly. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the activity or growth of bacteria in the gut. Therefore, they are substances that support the development of these “good” bacteria in the human body. It is a nutrient medium for probiotics that stimulates their growth. Remember: prebiotics do not contain bacteria!

The structure of prebiotics in food or cosmetics must be properly documented.

The advantages of prebiotics include stimulation of the immune system, lowering the LDL cholesterol fraction in the blood, ensuring an appropriate pH in the intestines, better absorption of calcium, alleviating the symptoms of stomach ulcers, and preventing vaginal mycosis. The right microbiome in and on the human body is an extremely important aspect of human health.

While writing this article for you, we could not fail to mention synbiotics. A synbiotic is a product that combines prebiotics with probiotics. It therefore works in two ways: it provides the right strains of bacteria and supports their growth and development in our intestines. Synbiotics prevent putrid processes in the intestines, constipation and diarrhea.

Did you know that microorganisms also inhabit human skin? The human skin is defined as the largest organ of the human body – it has approximately 1.8 m2. This is the first line of defense against unwanted pathogens. It separates our delicate interior from the outside world. Interestingly, it is home to a lot of different bacteria, viruses and fungi. The composition of the skin microbiome depends on the age and gender of its owner. And here it should be mentioned that also the cosmetics used can change the conditions on the skin and affect the condition of the microbiome.

What does our microbiome eat? Like any living organism, organic compounds are essential for its existence. Bacteria that live on our skin feed on prebiotics – substances that support their development.

Do you know which ingredients in cosmetics are prebiotic?
Below you will find a list of the most commonly used prebiotics:

poly and oligosaccharides,
most oligosaccharides, trehalose, centose,
fatty acid esters with oligosaccharides,

So how is the effect of prebiotics on our skin manifested? By supporting and activating the microbiome on our skin, they ensure the balance of the bacterial flora and protect against harmful microorganisms. They moisturize it and protect the hydro-lipid coat of our skin.

Conscious body care has become extremely important in everyday care. “Knowingly” certainly means with the progress of science, with knowledge and patience. In the era of frequent hand washing, disinfection and skin exposure to rapid changes in conditions, proper skin care is gaining importance. This is the first barrier that protects our delicate interior against external factors. It is on the skin that unwanted pathogens are trapped. What if the skin can be helped?
